Like you, Sarah, and unlike many of the hysterical LOST fans on the interwebs, I believe that Darlton and crew have a plan for reconciling these two timelines.

How could they not?

I very much like the resolution theory that you posted for the show, in particular how it uses Jack as the linchpin for the reconciliation.

There is a school of thought that the Jacob/MIB = White/Black equation is too obvious and easy, and that the writers are going to throw us a curve ball at some point, with Jacob proving to be more evil than just manipulative.

How would your very well-thought out theory be affected if that were the case?

I really enjoyed this posted and your theories. I loved the 'smirk' on Jacob's face. I think as this season ends, we ought to pay tribute and start watching from season 1 all over again. I for one will miss the genius of this show.

This was an interesting episode because we see characters becoming what other characters were before them. Claire is obviously what Danielle was years ago although she doesn't seem to be aware of how much time has passed.

It's obvious that now all those characters we saw related to the survivors were all the Smoke Monster. Yemi, Christian, Locke all had their dead bodies on the island and the Smoke Monster could become them. With Smokie becoming Locke it's the last dead body so he is stuck being Locke. It's interesting that Ilana knows that Smokie is stuck being Locke. Obviously her team knows something the rest of us don't.

It's interesting that they used the da Vinci's "Last Supper" painting with Locke being the Jesus role in the middle. I am wondering if that has anything to do with this season.

One of my theories is that they have to setup the flight 316 to fly out to the island like it did and join the time-lines up. Though that wouldn't explain the other people like Sawyer and Jin. They weren't on that flight at all.

I think the next few episodes will hopefully set us up as to what the goal is the rest of season, with a few surprises tossed in.

Man! What is with all the Jack haters? Every piece I've read about this episode is all about jack hate. I think it is clear that these people never experienced the Matthew Fox spin as Charlie Salinger. Now THAT guy... he was a mess who made horrible decisions without thinking of the consequences. He was in charge and always wining about it. Rejoice people Jack is way less of a mess than Charlie S.
Okay... now that I've got that out of the way. I'm so with you Sarah... Jacob is such a douche! What a smug jerk... all omnipotent and smarmy at the same time. He is the ultimate con-man. He makes people think they want something when it isn't what they want but what he wants. But there is a part of me that wonders if he really IS in control of everything the way people think he is. He reminds me of Q and I hope he gets kicked out of the Continuum soon.
I do think that Jacob and Smokey are at play in the Alt Universe. And I wonder if Smokey is as impotent as we think he is.
As far as getting pummeled over the head with Lewis Carroll novels... this is what I got from the Lighthouse in outline form:

Time is a ball of Yarn.

Flocke is a Black Kitten.

Jacob is a White Kitten.

Both were smothered by their controlling mother.

Jack is following Hurley.

Hurley is sitting on the key.

Charlie was all heart and light.

Sayid was all club and dark.

Charlie now appears dark but no one knows.

Sayid is now full of heart but no one knows.

Alt World Jack's son, David, plays piano.

All work and no play make Claire a dull girl.

The illness involves being taken over by residual energies reliving horrific or disturbing events.

Who is number 237? Rousseau perhaps?

Alt World Jack ate a bad peach and when he wakes up and throws a chair through the glass, he will realize he has something to do and will cause the unraveling of Alt World.

Great post Sarah... you described it in much better detail than I did. We have slightly different ideas about how in control Jacob is but I always love your posts... they usually make me look at things in a slightly different way. :)

Absolutely fantastic theories. Succinct and incredibly readable.

It hadn't crossed my mind yet that Jack would be bringing Parallel Jack to the island (Should we call him "PJ"?). I'm wondering though, how will we resolve the parallel underwater island with the one above ground?

Also, excellent tie in with Jack's need to fix things. I don't think enough importance is placed on Jacob's role within the entire show. He knows what's happening, what will happen, and thus what needs to happen. He is orchestrating the entire series of events, thus I don't feel like there is a lack of control anywhere, just a need for patience to see how the events play out.

Another question: What literary work could we use to reveal Aaron's importance in the series? Claire is always fixated on him, and Smoky has fixated on Claire and separating her from Aaron.

What do you think about Smoky's need to separate Claire from her baby?

I know, that's why I'm pissed at Jack and not Jacob ;p
I know that Jacob knows that the world won't end just because Jack broke the lighthouse. I don't blame the writers, either. You need conflict to create drama. I am blaming Jack as a character. Like I said, I am sure that we will get to see more about the lighthouse and learn more about its nature later. So I'm not even worried at all that we have "lost" the lighthouse (no pun intended) because I know that Jack will find a way around it. But for now, I choose to be angry at Jack (not the writers, not Jacob) for making a hasty choice and not thinking at all about the repercussions . :)

Oh, Jack, just accept your Jacobship already. :)

@Will: I didn't say Jack consciously thought about his need to fix things- I said Jacob thought about that. Jacob knows the way to get Jack to cooperate is to let him make mistakes that he has to fix. And I'm saying have faith in the writers, because Jack is just a character, and Lost is made of pure awesome-sauce, so I know they'll make it up to you. :)

I know that it's jacks character to fix what he breaks as we see from his story in the pilot episode, but I doubt that Jack conciously thought about that as he was breaking the mirror. I still blame Jack for making an immensely stupid decision without thought or care about reprocussions until afterwards. Not pissed at writers
